Hi there.
Its been an incredibly busy few months, full of projects, deadlines, but also loaded with inspiration, development and a refreshing new burst of creativity. I hadn't done much design outside of projects I had to do for class or minor jobs scattered here and there, so when I began designing full time it was like a bus ran me over robbing me of all creative ability. Its actually quite funny looking at my first projects and comparing them to my current ones. All this to say that there is something wonderful that happens when you let go of fear and comfort and just go for something uncharted and raw. So a challenge to all who read this thing, whatever you do, be courageous, push the norm and see what happens.
This is an amazing video by a great designer that has some interesting words.

Here are some screen shots of the latest issue of MOTION. I am branching out and trying to adapt some hand drawn elements into my designs. So I took two of my sketches, scanned them and dropped them into the layout. I like how they turned out. what do you think?

I moved into a house a few weeks ago. These are my new roommates. I like them. Dave is trying sell a bike on craigslist and he didn't have a camera, so he went and bought a disposable. We used the rest of the shots to document the beginning of some good times.

P.S. Dave was upset that none of these would work for his eHarmony profile...I beg to differ. Ladies he's available.

I Love My Job

I have a great job. I work with great people, in a cool environment, and am able to be part of some really powerful things that God is doing. One of the things I got to do last week was take photos for our monthly print piece called Motion. Motion is a collection of stories from people who attend or used to attend ROCKHARBOR. Our hope with Motion is to communicate what God is doing in the lives of our church. Its a really great thing and has really had a big impact here. Anyway, last week we went and took photos of a married couple and their two kids. They seem like your normal american family but they are anything but that. To sum up their story (which is INCREDIBLE), Dave was gay, his wife/used to be friend was gay . One night after work they had a little to much to drink and ended up sleeping together. They found out she was pregnant and had no clue what to do, they were both gay and although they loved each-other could never see themselves in a heterosexual monogamous relationship. God was working in their hearts and through a complete change of heart ended up turning to Christ and decided to get married. Thats a really brief summary but hopefully the point is communicated. God did some amazing things in their hearts and because of that they live radically different lives. The other part of the story is the blessing they received through the difficulty and struggle of their previous lives. Bella is their amazing 4 year old daughter, who without even knowing it, radiates Christ. Its hard to sum up this story and the emotion that comes with it but I hope the photos show a glimpse of this family.

Kids Camp

First of all I know these shots are sepia and look sad and depressing but these last three days were anything but that. The last three days we have been going and having kids camp. We play games with them and tell them stories and do some sort of craft with them. They are so much fun and are so happy. I have been so blessed to be in the midst of India's future and been able to give some much needed love to them. Enjoy.

Okay so this is going to be a really long post, which will consist mostly of photos so it shouldn't be too bad.
Alright, I have been in country for two weeks or so and have just experienced some life changing things. I got to attend a conference that took place at the Indian Institute of Advance Study in a little mountain town called Shimla (which took 7 hours by car to get there...makes for an awful 7 hours in the back of a crowded car). It was a beautiful place as you can tell from the pictures and it made me think of Harry Potter. Here are some photos from our trip.

Hey everyone, so we have been here for two days now and have gotten to see some pretty interesting stuff. Yesterday, we went to the Hanuman temple (who is the monkey god). We walked around inside the temple and just observed people worshiping, it was really strange, there was just this darkness there that is indescribable and those who have been know what I am trying to talk about. There was an urgency and everyone was just trying to get through quickly. There were gurus sitting around in this trans, and they would offer advice to people who needed it. Idols littered the walls and people would stare and touch them with the hope that they would receive a blessing. It was a dark and empty place filled with people who are desperately seeking.
I say this all not to paint a negative picture of these people but to try to paint a picture of the reality of what it is like to be in a country that is not only controlled by this religion but oppressed, and it overflows into every aspect into their culture. They are a beautiful people full of disparity, just like you and I.
I love this place and can't wait to tell people what we are seeing.

Well, we made the first leg of the trip, a 14 hour flight...it was neat. We are in the Hong Kong airport waiting for our next flight. So far I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with this airport. Here's why. First they have free wi fi, second in the bathrooms I kinda freaked out because they didnt have the little sanitary paper thingys, but after investigating I noticed that they have like purel for potties...you put some stuff on some tp and wipe it down...Ive never felt so safe in my life. I will post soon.

I am off to South Asia today. It couldn't be a better time to go. I am all ready and finally got a hold of some Malaria pills...close one. I still have to buy some linen pants, but other than that I am good to go. The ipod is charged, the camera is ready, passport is in hand, my new 40$ on sale Nothface bag is packed with t-shirts and plenty of boxers to get me through heat and humidity, and all the fun things that sweat...sorry. I am really excited to see what God does in a short three weeks. I know it will be great. I will post soon.

Well hello everyone,
I know I have been slacking with the whole blogging thing, but oh well, its a blog and its not the most significant part of my life. With that said I do feel obligated to update those who do read this. I started a new job (Read Below), I love it. I have the privilege of being creative every day, so when it comes to down time I like to just relax and thus the lack in photo posts. I have however gotten to shoot a lot of wedding lately, this last Friday Josh and I drove up to Vacaville, CA to shoot Kyle and Malorie's wedding. It was really nice getting up north and it was especially nice getting caught up with Josh. So that was Friday and Saturday, then on Saturday night after the wedding we drove back to Riverside because I had another wedding (Cole and Kim's) on Sunday. We got back to Riverside at 5:45 in the morning, so I slept and got up at 9 to get ready...I was tired. It was a great wedding though, my talented friend Shannen came with me and helped out. All of this brings us to the title of the post...So I was pretty tired on Sunday morning and as I was walking over to the school a man carrying long pieces of wood on his shoulder turned the corner and hit my face with them...It hurt, and I was bleeding a little, but the worst part was that I had to be at a wedding all day with people asking what happened to my face. It was lovely. I took a little photo with my phone this morning, it is much better than yesterday.
I leave for South Asia in a little over two weeks, I am really excited. Trever gets married in not to long, and I am figuring out where I am going to move in July. Its pretty crazy, a lot of change and a lot of processing, but it is good. I like change so its kinda fun living in the midst of so much of it. Thats pretty much it.

Well I have officially entered the working world. I know there were people who thought it would never happen, (trever), but I did it. And not just a job but full time, rockin staff, benefit kind of job. So yes I love my new job. I am the Graphic Design Associate at ROCKHARBOR in Costa Mesa, which is a fancy way of saying I am their full time graphic designer. So I welcome the work world with open arms and will still try to stick it to the man in anyway I can.
P.S. This is my desk, I like it.

Well I just got back from New York this morning, and once again I was not disappointed. I will post more pictures later but I figured I would start with this first. My friend Cole and I were walking back to our hotel and saw two gentlemen walking with "V" masks on from "V for Vendetta". Now its not everyday that you see that so we wondered if "Anonymous" was close and sure enough they were. They were protesting against the Church of Scientology, needless to say it was pretty interesting. Here are some photos, enjoy.

I am graduating from CBU in May. And no, CBU isn't the most academically esteemed school, and no its not the biggest, or home of the greatest sports teams (although our guys volleyball team could probably beat yours...). The one thing CBU has plenty of though is quality people. These three guys for example are kayaking the Mississippi from Minneapolis to New Orleans to raise money for International Justice Mission (IJM). Like I said they are cool boys. I've also had the privilege of getting pretty close with all of them, so I can take pride in my friends and in what they are doing with their summer. Well most of you have probably never heard of a town called Los Banos, I hadn't either until today when Mike Berger and I rolled into town in our fiery hot Toyota Camery. We are here shooting a wedding and on our way we made a stop by Mike's aunts dairy, it was pretty neat, and it was definitely nice to get away for a bit. My roommate Josh and I are going to be graduating this May. In light of its significance we have adopted Third Eye Blinds classic "Can I Graduate" to our listening rotation. Its weird knowing I have spent the last 4 years of my life getting to know this one place and come May will be moving to the unkown. I am excited. I like change, and often try to embrace the growth that comes along with it. So heres to the unknown.

This afternoon my best friend Curtis and I went out on a little adventure. It was nice. We went to this little ally in the wood streets here in Riverside, then made our way over Fairmont park to shoot the lake just before the sun went down. The clouds made for an incredible sky. This last weekend it was my good friend Amy's birthday. Her family came down to visit her so we took the opportunity to take some family shots. We walked around downtown Riverside and made a stop in Downtown Books, which is a great place to shoot if you get a chance. It was a blast to shoot such a great family. So in my eternal pursuite to one-up my older brother Trever I came up with this. In all honesty you're probably looking at this blog right now because you were looking at his and were curious of who was cool enough to take 2nd place in his links, well its me, his little brother, (Michael Norwood took first, and I am a little bitter about that, but thats for another post). Anyway, Trever started doing this cool thing of taking blurry pictures, so to one-up him I thought I would do the same thing except involve you the readers. Becasue although its cool to look at Trev's blurry pictures, it doesnt offer much entertainment. So here is what I have done, I have taken some "Trever Hoehne esq Blurry Pictures", but added a twist, I need you all to guess what the object is...fun right??? Godspeed and good luck.

Black and White

The three pictures below were taken during our visit to a refugee camp near the Burundi border. The circumstances these people lived in was unbelievable and heart breaking. Despite their unbearable living conditions these people are resilient, they succeed regardless and find joy, it was inspiring given what we as Americans have, and yet still have no joy. The top picture was taken while playing with some of the children, It was a blast! I just started running and the chased after me. The bottom one was taken while I was surrounded by them. I held my camera over them making them look into the sun resulting in funny expressions. The third was taken while we were in a school building

This picture was taken on one of our home visits. We had an opportunity to work with a ministry that focused on people with aids, they would visit their homes and talk with them and pray with them, it was one of the most humbling things I have ever experienced. This picture is of a boy outside of one of the homes.

The next three pictures were taken at our visit to a prostitute ministry. These women are given alternative ways to make money by making baskets, embroidering, and washing clothes, giving them hope and some of their dignity and self worth back. We visited their work area and got to meet and talk with them and their children.

The next two pictures taken at the Refugee camp. Again playing the children, and then trying to explain the peace sign you can see some of them doing it backwards, not separating their fingers...it was a difficult task but it turned out well.

This picture was taken at a genocide memorial. I dont even really know what to say about it other than it was hard to see and it was an oppressing feeling.

This picture was taken when we visited the Tula kids. These children were the outcast of society in a way. Children are already looked at poorly but these ones were if possible looked at even lower.

Yes, I know that I am a disgrace to the blogging community because of my lack there of. I apologize, and will attempt to do better about it. These are more pictures from Rwanda that I wanted to have a little fun with by turning them B&W (for those of you who aren't graphic design majors at cbu that stands for Black and White). I made it home safe and healthy, but changed none the less. Again I was stretched, challanged, motivated, inspired and saw new realities of life and what I think happiness is. Well, I believe this is the first time Ive posted something that has nothing to do with pictures, but I was thinking and this is blogger and the opportunities are endless, so why not.
In 4 days I will be on my way to Rwanda, Africa. I traveled to Africa in 2004 and absolutely fell in love with it so needless to say I am more than excited to go back. On this trip my team will be working with orphans and street kids in the capital city, Kigali. I am delighted that we have such a wonderfull opportunity that Im sure many dream about having.
The strange thing about Africa, and every 3rd world country I suppose is that despite how many pictures you see of malnurished children, how many articles you read in the paper, how many things you see at starbucks that have some affiliation with something that is happening in Africa, nothing prepares you for the reality of it. There is something about being there and experiencing it first hand, smelling the smells, tasting the food, hearing the music, getting the dirt under your fingernails, it all the sudden turns from something sensory to something comletlely different that changes the heart. Some have called it getting "the bug", whatever the title is the experience leaves you changed, permanently. I am excited to embrace the culture again, and again be changed.
I have 4 days and have allot to get done, but thats a good thing becasue without things to do that 4 days can be the longest of my life. I am anxious to go, but that time will come soon enough. To the multitude of my blog readers, if you think about it pray for my team and I, as we will undoubtedly face trial after trial. I will post updates if I can but most likely I will not have access to internet. I will be taking a TON of pictures (there goes the whole post that has nothing to do with pictures oh well.) which I will post when I get home. So goodbye, I will talk to you all in 3 weeks!

A few weekends ago I had the privilege of shooting my first wedding. The couple was so great, they were so easy to work with, and really willing to try some fun stuff. This week the journalism team from CBU is in New York city for our annual journalism conference. Yesterday Zack, AJ, and myself walked around the city and took some fun pictures, and saw some really cool things. New York is an awesome city and its so much fun to take photos of. Enjoy.

WBL (Wooden Bat League)

For a few centuries now one tradition has made its mark in the American memory and has claimed the title "Americas favorite past time". In honor of this, a few men at CBU have developed its own sort of "past time", its called the WBL. There are two rules, 1. Only wooden bats are allowed 2. You must have fun. Its simple its light hearted much like the people who make up the teams. This season the WBL has 4 teams the Blue Team, Green Team, Red Team and the Black Team, the names are random and have something to do with Science. These are some pics from the Draft night, enjoy.

Last week I got the privilege to shoot Danielle and James's engagement pictures. They were so fun! They are such nice people and have a great time together. I was kinda scared because this is my first couple on my own (i.e. without m.norwood) and I couldn't be happier, they made it so easy. We shot on Catalina Island which is a great place to go if you ever get a chance, so everything about the day was just a blast. I hope you enjoy.

The last two days, myself and a couple other CBU students went to the AIDS Summit hosted at Saddleback church. It was incredible to discuss the churches role in fighting this pandemic. There were allot of smart people and allot of good times. Sen. Barack Obama was one of the speakers, and I have to say that he was awesome! Ok this should have been my first post but oh well. There are some very significant people in my life, these people are the reason I end up doing the things I do i.e. Music, Photography... and allot of other things. My brother Trever is my best friend, my biggest influence and the person I look up to the most, he pushes me and challenges me to pursue my passions even when I think I am no good. He is one of my biggest photography influences, and is one if the best photographers I know.
Another huge influence of mine is the one and only Michael Norwood, he took the time over the summer and taught me the how to use a camera. Then after he showed me the ropes, he trusted me enough to hire me, which has been the most significant opportunity for me to grow and learn as a photographer. These guys are huge to me and I am forever indebted to them. So here's to you two.
